Goethe's "More Light!" On this day in 1832 Germany's greatest literary light, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, gave the world his last metaphor, this time unintended. After first making a reference to a girl of his youth, and then to his long dead friend, Friedrich von Schiller, Goethe ordered his servant to open another shutter with "More light!" He died shortly afterwards, aged eighty-two, his last act being to trace a word in the air with his finger. (Today's article is by guest contributor Gary Baldridge.) |
