Barry Moser

Barry Moser is a printer, painter, printmaker, designer, author, essayist, teacher and, it is often said, the foremost book illustrator in America today. If, as he says, he has a "sometimes over-productive nature," it is one enjoyed by many. His work is represented in the world's leading libraries and museums, he teaches and speaks about the book arts internationally, and he has illustrated and/or designed over 250 books, ranging from The Divine Comedy to My Dog Rosie, with National Book Awards and Best Book citations throughout the range.
His work on the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible has been praised, discussed and documented in print and on radio, television and film. It was also the only one-man show by a living artist ever to be mounted at the National Gallery of Art Library in Washington. TinL is proud to present here a sampling of these wood engravings -- many of them appearing for the first time on the internet -- and a few excerpts from the woodcutter's interviews and essays. Though the deluxe edition of the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible now sells for $30,000, it is still the story of the carpenter, retold by one who can "pull more out of a piece of wood than any other contemporary American engraver."

Current Projects

Barry is currently working on illustrations for a handful of new books:

Walking Home, by Tony Johnston (Scholastic, 2005) is a telling in poetic form of a Cree family being moved from North Alabama to Oklahoma along "The Trail of Tears."

Literary Genius, Joseph Epstein, ed. (Tehabi Press, 2005) portrays twenty-five major British-American writers, and illustrates their works.

Deaths and Transfigurations (Paraclete Press, 2005) is a collection of Paul Mariani's recent poetry.

Three Silly Billies (Simon & Schuster, 2005) is an off-the-wall retelling of the Billy Goat Gruff story.
