Paul Mariani
Paul Mariani, first in our new series of guest writers, is a poet, a biographer, a literary scholar, a magazine editor, and a subscriber to TinL. His fourteen books include five collections of poetry, four biographies of modern American poets (Hart Crane, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, William Carlos Williams) and several essay collections. He is currently University Professor of English at Boston College, and at work on several new books. One is a biography of Gerard Manley Hopkins, to be published by Viking in 2006 -- with a biography of Wallace Stevens to follow. And in June 2005, Paraclete Press will publish Deaths & Transfigurations: Poems, with illustrations by Barry Moser, a long-time friend.

The Death of Robert Lowell
On this day in 1977, the poet Robert Lowell died at the age of sixty in the back seat of a New York City taxi. Lowell was on his way from JFK airport to his ex-wife, the writer Elizabeth Hardwick, after a disastrous meeting in Ireland with his present wife, the writer and Guiness heiress, Caroline Blackwood. |
