Ludwig Bemelmans - LIFE STORIES

9/5/1939     Ludwig Bemelmans and Madeline
Ludwig Bemelmans claimed that all his books -- including the Madeline stories, one of the best-selling series in the history of children's literature -- were autobiographical because he had no imagination. If true, it hardly mattered: on its own, his full, improbable life, from Ellis Island to Ritz-Carlton to White House, could have filled a library.

He described his life as a restaurateur in Life Class and Hotel Splendide, his travels to Ecuador and Italy in The Donkey Inside and Italian Holiday, and his stint as a Hollywood screenwriter in the novel Dirty Eddie. At the time of his death he was working on the story of his childhood. Bemelmans was a genial satirist and lover of life, but a serious intent often underlay his humor, especially in his novels...."
KidsReads.com
This website for children offers a short biography, bibliography, list of characters, trivia, online quiz, and links to online games featuring Madeline and her friends.

"What makes Madeline so popular? Her spirit: unlike so many girly-girl heroines, Madeline is afraid of nothing. She laughs at tigers in the zoo, taunts bullies and runs away to join a circus. She is also always a kind friend to the rest of her schoolmates and never loses her lopsided smile. We've got all the info you could want about Madeline and her adventures, so read on!"
Teacher Resource File
