Richard Brautigan, Fame to Suicide On this day in 1984 Richard Brautigan's body was found in his California home, a suicide some weeks earlier. The literary critics have never been kind to the writing, and the biographers have been unable to penetrate the writer's life, but Brautigan was a counter-culture hero in the late sixties and seventies; by the time of his death, the cult, the counter-culture, and his own mental health were pretty much gone. |

Essay: "Richard Brautigan: A Poetics of Alienation" Read a critical analysis of narrative, theme, and symbolism in the poetry of Rihcard Brautigan.
"Much of the criticism which deals with his work, suffers from an inability to separate the author from the ethos which swept the period in which it was written. Although both Brautigan's prose and poetry are coloured by the whimsical, highly transparent positively which was characteristic of the hippie generation, these moments are neither indicative of Brautigan's style, nor are they particularly luminous surrounded as they are by the innovative use/misuse of conventional literary forms and devices." | | The Brautigan Bibliography This highly recommended website is much more than its name suggests. It offers a biography, a detailed annotated bibliography, audio recordings, a family genealogy, a "who's who" in the writer's life, and reviews and background information of novels, poems, stories, and collections including:
