Dick Simon and Gentlemen-Publishers On this day in 1960, Richard Simon, co-founder of Simon & Schuster, died. In Another Life, the memoir by S&S editor-in-chief, Michael Korda, we learn that on all S&S editors' desks was a plaque from Dick Simon which read, "Give the reader a break"; we get the impression, too, that Simon was of the last gentleman-publisher generation, before the industry fell victim to conglomeracy, profit and hype. |
